Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG)

Glass Reinforced Gypsum is a building material used as a floor underlayment, used in wood-frame and concrete construction for fire ratings, sound reduction, radiant heating and floor leveling. It is a mixture of gypsum, Portland cement, and sand. The material consists of super-fine alpha plaster, reinforced with continuous filament glass fibre mat and galvanised metal channel. It’s extensively used in shopping centres, airports and office developments, typically forming bulkheads with sharply defined steps and complex angles, or contemporary sculptures enhancing main communal areas.

GRG, or Glass Reinforced Gypsum is a strong, versatile, lightweight product intended primarily for internal locations. It is manufactured with hard casting plasters reinforced with glass fibre matting and metal or timber sections. It can be screwed directly or traditionally wired and wadded to a metal framework.

The complete system including all supporting framework will be detailed, supplied and erected by the company. Typical uses are for domes, column casings, lighting troughs, fascias and bulkheads. In certain instances GRG can be installed in semi external situations but it should not be exposed to direct weathering. The benefits of specifying GRG are its crisp clean lines with flawless monolithic faces free from traditionally plastered skim lines and rounded arises. Because of its strength and light weight, the casts can be made larger thus reducing the site installation time.

This innovative material is the first choice of many architects when planning to create complex shapes. Quick to install, with a seamless finish, GRG is ideal for achieving aesthetically demanding forms, particularly where shapes curve in two planes. GRG has to be constructed with care and speed.

Providing first-class workmanship and care about finishing every detail with the greatest precision, most companies use GRG for ceilings, columns, wall features, Jesmonite (the modern alternative to original external render and stonework) and any other complex shapes with that perfect, seamless finish.

Glass Reinforced Gypsum, column casings are a modern alternative to traditional methods of providing an aesthetic casing around unsightly structural columns." Our GRG casings are manufactured in our modern production facility in Leeds using a range of hard casting plasters hand laminated with multi layers of glass fibre matt for reinforcement, resulting in casings giving a perfectly smooth and highly durable surface finish

Whether you have a vision for large exterior columns, a detailed piece of period stonework, or an enormous Portland stone wall, we can realise your vision. Our specialists are skilled in producing bespoke GRC that resembles original external render or stonework.
